Intrauterine Growth Restriction as an Independent Risk Factor for Adult Chronic Kidney Disease
22 Sept 2025 • A study of nearly 1,600 adults followed into their third decade found that intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) significantly increased the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD).
CKD prevalence was higher in those with IUGR compared with controls (25.3% vs 18.1%), and multivariate analysis confirmed IUGR as an independent risk factor (OR 1.50).
Additional contributors included diabetes (OR 1.60) and female sex (OR 2.18).
These findings highlight fetal growth restriction—especially in women—as a key early-life determinant of later kidney disease risk.
