Maternal Subclinical Hypothyroidism Increases Birth Weight Discordance in Twin Pregnancies
6 Oct 2025 • A recent study of twin pregnancies revealed that maternal subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) markedly increased the risk of birth weight discordance.
Key Findings:
- SCH was present in 45.3% of women, while 43.4% of twin pairs showed growth discordance.
- Larger twins were more often male, taller, and had greater head circumference.
- Mothers with SCH had higher rates of discordance and greater intertwin weight differences.
Logistic regression identified SCH as an independent risk factor (OR 1.601–9.425), and linear analysis confirmed a positive association with the extent of weight difference, suggesting SCH as a key contributor to asymmetric fetal growth in twin gestations.
