Early Renal Ultrasound Reliably Rules Out Post-Cystectomy Strictures
16 Oct 2025 • A retrospective study of bladder cancer patients undergoing robot-assisted radical cystectomy with extracorporeal urinary diversion found that a 6-week postoperative renal ultrasound (RUS) was highly effective for detecting ureteroenteric anastomotic strictures (UAS).
Among 623 renal units, hydronephrosis occurred in 23%, and 17% of these developed UAS, compared with just one case (0.2%) without hydronephrosis.
The 6-week RUS showed 96% sensitivity, 80% specificity, and 99% negative predictive value, confirming it as a reliable, non-invasive, and cost-effective tool to rule out UAS after cystectomy.
