Asthma Linked to Higher Risk of Degenerative Heart Valve Disease

21 Aug 2025 • A study of 483,735 adults followed for 13.8 years found that asthma was modestly but significantly linked to a higher risk of degenerative valvular heart disease.

Compared with non-asthmatics, asthma patients had an increased incidence of aortic stenosis (HR 1.31), aortic regurgitation (HR 1.24), mitral regurgitation (HR 1.19), and pulmonary regurgitation (HR 1.34).

While the association with aortic regurgitation weakened after adjusting for asthma medications, other links remained robust.

Findings suggest asthma may predispose to valvular disease via inflammatory pathways, highlighting the need for careful cardiovascular monitoring in this population.
