Atopic Disease Flags Higher Long-Term Complications after Bone Grafting
12 Nov 2025 • Patients with atopic conditions—including asthma, atopic dermatitis, and allergic rhinitis—face significantly higher complication rates following bone grafting procedures, the TriNetX data revealed.
In a large matched cohort of 38,668 adults, those with atopic disease had markedly increased 90-day risks of infection or wound complications (HR 1.19), osteomyelitis (HR 1.29), and hardware removal (HR 1.22) compared with non-atopic patients. The elevated risk persisted over two years, extending to mechanical loosening (HR 1.35) and revision surgery (HR 1.16). No differences were observed in graft failure, pathological fractures, or opioid use.
Clinicians are urged to factor atopic status into preoperative risk assessment and adopt closer postoperative surveillance to improve long-term outcomes.
