Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea Markedly Increases Risk of Mild Cognitive Impairment
20 Aug 2025 • A study of patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) found that 38% had mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
Severe OSA (apnea-hypopnea index ≥30/h) was linked to a striking tenfold higher risk of MCI compared to mild OSA (OR 10.56), while moderate OSA also increased risk when measured by oxygen desaturation index.
Poor nighttime sleep quality and excessive daytime sleepiness were additional independent predictors.
These findings highlight the strong impact of severe OSA and disturbed sleep on cognitive decline, underscoring the importance of early detection and management to protect cognitive health.
