Half of Indians Tested Show Abnormal Glucose, Nationwide Data Warns of Growing Diabetes Crisis
13 Nov 2025 • A nationwide review of more than 143,000 diagnostic reports indicates that abnormal blood glucose levels are becoming increasingly common across India.
Key Findings: Half of all individuals tested were found to have elevated blood glucose levels.
-
More than 50% of HbA1c results fell within the diabetes or prediabetes range, mirroring trends from the ICMR INDIAB-17 study.
-
Insulin resistance was detected in 58% of users, indicating substantial underlying metabolic dysfunction.
-
Over 90% of those with high glucose also showed abnormalities in liver, lipid, thyroid, or cardiac parameters.
-
High blood sugar was observed across all age groups, with a marked rise after age 30 and peaks beyond age 60, where eight in ten reports showed hyperglycemia.
-
Men had slightly higher rates of elevated glucose (51.9%) and insulin resistance (64%) compared with women.
-
Prevalence varied significantly by region, with Puducherry reporting the highest burden (63%) and Himachal Pradesh the lowest (41%).
These findings point to a rapidly intensifying metabolic health crisis in India and underscore the need for earlier screening, sustained lifestyle intervention, and regular monitoring to prevent progression from prediabetes to diabetes.
