Obstructive Sleep Apnea Elevates Long-Term Risk of Cerebral Microbleeds
29 Oct 2025 • Moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) more than doubled the risk of developing cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) over eight years, new data showed.
Of 1,441 middle-aged and older adults (mean age 58 years), incident CMBs occurred in 7.3% of those with moderate to severe OSA versus 3.3% without OSA (RR 2.14). The link was independent of APOE-ε4 status, and mild OSA showed no elevated risk.
The study reinforces OSA as a modifiable risk factor for microvascular brain injury.
