Chronic HCV Infection Amplifies the Risk of Pancreatic Cancer
18 Nov 2025 • A recent analysis has unveiled a new connection between hepatitis C infection and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.
Key Findings:
- In more than 6.3 million veterans tested for hepatitis C virus (HCV), individuals with chronic HCV faced a 76% higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer vs. those without infection (aHR 1.76).
- Prior HCV exposure also posed a higher risk (aHR 1.18). - Genotype 3 showed the strongest association (aHR 2.02), followed by genotype 1 (aHR 1.75), both exceeding genotype 2 (aHR 1.35).
- Pancreatic cancer occurred at younger ages in people with HCV, with a median diagnosis at 65 vs 72 years in uninfected peers.
The findings imply that HCV may be a risk factor for pancreatic cancer.
