Rheumatoid Arthritis Significantly Increases Risk of Thyroid Cancer

30 Sept 2025 • A large cohort study of over 42,000 patients found that rheumatoid arthritis (RA) significantly increased the risk of thyroid cancer compared with matched controls.

With a 1-year lag, thyroid cancer occurred in 0.18% of RA patients versus 0.03% of controls (risk ratio 5.51), and sensitivity analysis with a 180-day lag confirmed the link (risk ratio 4.36). Cox regression showed an adjusted HR of 1.40, indicating an independent association.

These findings highlight RA as a risk factor for thyroid cancer and emphasize the need for heightened vigilance and potential cancer surveillance in this population.
