Half of Adults with NCDs Face Stress, Depression, or Anxiety in Northern India

31 Oct 2025 • A recent study revealed that more than half of adults with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in northern India experience psychological disorders, highlighting a significant public health concern.

Among 600 patients assessed, 51% had at least one mental health condition—stress was most prevalent (50%), followed by depression (8.5%) and anxiety (7.2%). Mental health issues were notably more common in urban residents (55.3%) than their rural counterparts (46.7%). Individuals with cardiovascular, kidney, or malignant diseases had an increased risk of depression and anxiety, underscoring the link between chronic illness and mental health.

The findings underscore the need to integrate mental health screening and counseling into NCD care to improve overall quality of life.
