Type 2 Diabetes Doubles Risk of Hearing Loss
6 Aug 2025 • Patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) show a significantly higher rate of clinically significant hearing loss than non-diabetics (53.0% vs. 25.2%; risk ratio 2.3).
Key Findings:
- Sensorineural loss was most common (46.2%), with conductive (5.0%) and mixed (10.4%) types also noted.
- Nearly 30% had bilateral hearing loss, markedly higher than in controls.
- Severity ranged from mild to profound.
These findings highlight the need for routine hearing assessments in T2DM management to address this underrecognized complication and improve patient outcomes.
