17 Oct 2025 • In a study of 712 elderly patients hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), metabolic syndrome (MetS) was linked to significantly worse short-term outcomes.

Key Findings:

• After propensity score matching (n = 336), 90-day mortality was markedly higher in those with MetS (29.8% vs 11.9%).
• Multivariate analysis confirmed MetS as an independent predictor of death (HR 1.98), and each additional MetS component increased mortality risk 1.46-fold.

These findings show that MetS nearly doubles death risk in elderly CAP patients, emphasizing the importance of early detection and metabolic optimization to improve survival.
