Pre-Pregnancy BMI Strongly Predicts Risk of Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy
1 Aug 2025 • An analysis of 51 million pregnancies shows a strong, linear link between higher pre-pregnancy BMI and increased risk of hypertensive disorders.
Each 5-unit BMI increase raised odds of pregnancy-induced hypertension (OR=1.82), preeclampsia (OR=1.70), eclampsia (OR=1.36), and overall hypertensive complications (OR=1.75).
These findings highlight the importance of preconception BMI optimization to reduce the global burden of hypertensive pregnancy disorders.
