Daily Caffeinated Coffee Consumption May Shield against AF Recurrence after Cardioversion
10 Nov 2025 • New evidence challenges the notion that caffeine worsens arrhythmia.
In the DECAF randomized trial, adults (mean age 69) with atrial fibrillation (AF) or atrial flutter post-cardioversion who consumed at least 1 cup of caffeinated coffee daily had a 39% lower recurrence risk versus those avoiding caffeine (47% vs 64%; HR 0.61). Adverse events were similar across groups.
The findings suggest moderate daily coffee is safe and may confer protective benefit against AF recurrence, calling for a reassessment of traditional caffeine restrictions in post-cardioversion patients.
