Early or Late Menopause? Both may Heighten Stroke Risk
21 Nov 2025 • Age at menopause showed a U-shaped relationship with stroke risk in an analysis of 9,159 postmenopausal women.
Each one-year delay in menopause lowered stroke odds by roughly 6% (OR 0.94). But earlier menopause carried marked risk: onset before 45 years more than doubled stroke risk (OR 2.76), while menopause at 45–49 years doubled it (OR 2.08) compared with the 50–55-year group.
Stroke-free survival was also poorer in premature menopause, underscoring menopause timing as a critical cerebrovascular risk marker that may warrant closer preventive vigilance in both early and late transition.
