Continuous Glucose Monitoring Metrics Predict Mortality Risk in Diabetes Beyond HbA1c
7 Aug 2025 • A study of 2,752 adults with type 1 and 2 diabetes using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) for up to 6 months found that key glucose metrics—higher mean glucose, time above range, glycemic variability, and glycemic risk index—were independently linked to increased 5-year all-cause mortality.
Each increase in mean glucose and time above range raised mortality risk by 18–23%, while more time in range reduced risk (HR 0.83).
These associations remained significant after adjusting for HbA1c, underscoring CGM’s superior ability to detect harmful glucose patterns missed by HbA1c alone.
