Maternal PTSD Linked to Increased Risks of Low Birthweight and Preterm Birth
5 Aug 2025 • A study encompassing 157,708 pregnancies found that maternal post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is significantly associated with adverse pregnancy and neonatal outcomes.
Key Findings:
- Mothers with PTSD had double the risk of delivering low birthweight infants (OR 2.05) and a 23% higher risk of preterm birth (OR 1.23).
- PTSD was linked to smaller infant head circumference, feeding and sleeping difficulties, reduced breastfeeding rates, and lower infant cortisol levels.
These findings underscore the critical need to identify and manage PTSD during pregnancy to improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes.
