Hypothyroidism Significantly Raises Wound Complication Risk After Laryngectomy
18 Jul 2025 • In laryngectomy patients, hypothyroidism (19.3%) substantially raises the risk of postoperative wound complications, particularly pharyngocutaneous fistula (PCF).
Patients with hypothyroidism were nearly three times more likely to develop PCF (OR 2.85), with the risk soaring to over sevenfold when hypothyroidism developed postoperatively (OR 7.69).
Overall wound complications were also significantly higher (OR 2.48).
These findings underscore the need for routine thyroid function screening and proactive management protocols for laryngectomy patients to mitigate wound-healing complications.
