Severe Eczema Carries Substantially Higher Thromboembolism Risk
28 Oct 2025 • A Swedish study of over 2.1 lakh adults revealed that severe atopic dermatitis (AD) substantially increased venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk.
While overall VTE incidence was comparable between patients with AD and controls (1.49 vs 1.71 per 1,000 person-years; aHR 1.04), those with severe disease faced a 93% greater risk (aHR 1.93).
The association remained consistent across all age groups and was strongest in younger adults aged 18–39 years, whose risk was almost three-fold higher (aHR 2.95).
The findings suggest that severe AD—especially in younger patients—should prompt closer vigilance for thrombotic events.
