Insulin Resistance Linked to 81% Higher Risk of Speech-Frequency Hearing Loss
14 Aug 2025 • A study of adults found a strong link between insulin resistance (IR), measured by the metabolic score for IR (METS-IR), and sensorineural hearing loss (HL), especially at speech frequencies.
Nearly 25% had speech-frequency HL (SFHL), and those in the highest METS-IR tertile had an 81% higher SFHL risk (OR 1.814) than the lowest. Linear trends showed that rising IR increased HL risk, with high-frequency HL affecting almost half of the participants.
Findings highlight the need for early IR management to protect both metabolic and hearing health.
