Moderate Kidney Dysfunction Elevates Sudden Cardiac Arrest Risk
31 Jul 2025 • A large study found that moderate chronic kidney disease (eGFR 30–<60 mL/min/1.73 m²) independently increases the risk of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).
Among 2,068 SCA cases and 852 controls, moderate CKD was linked to 32% higher odds of SCA (OR 1.32), with each 10 mL/min/1.73 m² drop in eGFR below 90 raising risk by 24%.
An external cohort validated the association with an even higher risk (OR 1.54). Findings highlight the importance of including moderate kidney dysfunction in SCA risk assessments to enhance prevention efforts.
