Maternal Obesity Linked to Higher Astigmatism Risk in Children
15 Sept 2025 • A study of mother-child pairs found that maternal pre-pregnancy overweight and obesity were linked to altered corneal properties and higher astigmatism risk in offspring.
Children of overweight/obese mothers showed steeper corneal curvature and greater corneal and total astigmatism versus those of normal-BMI mothers.
Adjusted analyses confirmed associations of pre-pregnancy BMI with steep corneal curvature (β=0.35), corneal astigmatism (β=0.21), and total astigmatism (β=0.22).
Obesity markedly increased steep curvature (β=1.52) and prevalence of both corneal and total astigmatism, underscoring long-term ocular impacts of maternal weight.
