Autoimmune Diseases Linked to Increased Risks of Melanoma and Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer
12 Sept 2025 • In a cohort of 419,789 participants, researchers found that autoimmune diseases were linked to increased risks of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers.
Melanoma risk was elevated in patients with Sjögren’s syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), vitiligo, and autoimmune thyroiditis, while non-melanoma skin cancer risk was higher with Sjögren’s, IBD, and type 1 diabetes.
Vitiligo—previously thought protective—was associated with higher risks of melanoma and basal cell carcinoma, potentially reflecting genetic diversity or immune checkpoint inhibitor use.
These findings underscore the importance of heightened dermatologic surveillance in autoimmune populations.
