Cardiometabolic Burden Elevated in Primary Hyperparathyroidism; Surgery Lowers Diabetes Risk
24 Nov 2025 • Patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) carry a significantly higher cardiometabolic burden than the general population, new data revealed.
Tracking more than 50,000 adults with pHPT against 150,000 matched controls, researchers found greater long-term risk for hypertension (aHR 1.22), cardiovascular disease (aHR 1.28), cerebrovascular events (aHR 1.22), and type 2 diabetes (aHR 1.07). Notably, nearly 6,700 patients who underwent parathyroidectomy saw meaningful metabolic gains: new-onset diabetes rates dropped from 15.18 to 10.77 per 1,000 person-years (AHR 0.56).
The findings reinforce the need for active cardiometabolic surveillance in pHPT and suggest that timely surgical management may protect against diabetes in appropriately selected patients.
