Eyelid Complications More Common in Obese Patients with OSA

24 Dec 2025 • The TriNetX analysis of more than 630,000 patients showed that obese individuals with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) were more likely to develop eyelid ptosis and dermatochalasis than obese peers without OSA.

Eyelid complications occurred in 2.41% of patients with OSA versus 1.23% of matched controls, representing a 95% higher risk (RR 1.95) and a number needed to harm of 119. Ptosis was more than twice as common in the OSA group (1.51% vs 0.67%; RR 2.25), while dermatochalasis was also significantly more frequent (1.33% vs 0.70%; RR 1.90).

The findings support closer ophthalmologic surveillance in obese patients with OSA and underscore the value of integrated care between sleep medicine and eye health.
