Excessive Pregnancy Weight Gain and Anemia Raise Postpartum Hemorrhage Risk
10 Oct 2025 • A study of spontaneous vaginal deliveries identified excessive gestational weight gain and maternal anemia as key independent predictors of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH).
Women with PPH more often had excessive weight gain (41.9% vs 27.1%), anemia (28.7% vs 20.4%), and fetal macrosomia (3.0% vs 0.9%).
Multivariate analysis confirmed anemia as the strongest predictor (aOR 1.86), followed by excessive weight gain (aOR 1.64).
Overweight or obesity alone was not associated with PPH, highlighting the importance of optimal weight management and anemia prevention to lower hemorrhage risk in childbirth.
