Diabetic Macular Edema Common in Type 1 Diabetes, Driven by Duration and Poor Glycemic Control

1 Oct 2025 • A meta-analysis of 20,074 patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) found a pooled diabetic macular edema (DME) prevalence of 11.1%, rising to 14.8% with 20 years’ disease duration and HbA1c of 8.6%.

Each additional year of diabetes increased prevalence by 1.2 percentage points, while each 1% HbA1c rise raised it by 4.7 points. Hypertension, dyslipidemia, and nephropathy further amplified the risk.

The findings highlight DME as a major burden in T1D, underscoring the need for personalized screening and proactive risk factor management to prevent vision loss.
