Severe Cutaneous Adverse Reactions Significantly Elevate Risk of Autoimmune Diseases

30 Jul 2025 • A large study of severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCARs) patients and 211,700 matched controls found a markedly higher risk of autoimmune diseases (ADs) post-SCARs.

Over 5.2 years, 2.2% of SCARs patients developed ADs vs. 0.14% in controls—an incidence rate of 418.5 vs. 27.0 per 100,000 person-years (adjusted HR = 15.5).

The increased risk spanned multiple ADs, including systemic vasculitis, type 1 diabetes, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis.

These findings underscore the need for long-term surveillance and early intervention in patients recovering from SCARs.
