Gestational Reactive Hypoglycemia Linked to Adverse Neonatal Outcomes
28 Aug 2025 • In a study of 114,148 pregnancies, including 18,878 with gestational reactive hypoglycemia (GRH), GRH was linked to higher risks of small for gestational age (RR 1.49), low birth weight (RR 1.35), fetal growth restriction (RR 1.21), and NICU admission (RR 1.23) compared with euglycemic pregnancies.
When defined as postload glucose <3 mmol/L, GRH sharply raised NICU admission risk (RR 3.39), while GRH detected only on glucose tolerance testing was associated with polyhydramnios (RR 1.93) and small for gestational age (RR 1.90).
Findings highlight GRH as an under-recognized pregnancy risk factor, supporting standardized diagnostic criteria and closer monitoring.
