Type 1 Diabetes Doubled Dementia Risk, Especially Vascular Subtype

22 Sept 2025 • A new study of 43,440 individuals with type 1 diabetes and 217,109 controls found diabetes doubled dementia risk over 14.3 years (1.2% vs 0.9%; HR 2.02).

Subtype risks were elevated for Alzheimer’s disease (HR 1.38), vascular dementia (HR 3.73), and non-Alzheimer–nonvascular dementia (HR 1.87).

Key risk factors in type 1 diabetes included longer disease duration, higher HbA1c, elevated systolic blood pressure, prior stroke, cardiovascular disease, lower education, and being single.

Findings underscore the importance of aggressive vascular and metabolic risk management to reduce cognitive decline in this population.
