Eyes & Stroke: Genetic Study Reveals Surprising Two-Way Risks
6 Aug 2025 • Genetic analysis reveals a bidirectional link between eye diseases and stroke subtypes.
Age-related macular degeneration was tied to reduced risks of subarachnoid hemorrhage (5%), ischemic stroke (2%), and small-vessel stroke (7%).
In contrast, keratitis, amblyopia, ptosis, eyelid inflammation, and strabismus increased stroke risk by 3%–23%.
Stroke also raises risks of ocular issues, including refractive error (17%), uveitis (15% after intracerebral hemorrhage), and higher odds of diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and amblyopia, highlighting a complex, two-way brain-eye connection.
