Colorectal Neoplasm Risk Surges in MASLD and MASH Patients
13 Nov 2025 • A study of 143,929 adults showed a strong link between metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and metabolic-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) and the risk of colorectal neoplasia.
MASLD was associated with a 2.7-fold increase in colorectal cancer (HR 2.71) and a 2.5-fold rise in benign colorectal neoplasms (HR 2.50), independent of diabetes, hypertension and obesity.
MASH carried an even greater burden, with a five-fold higher risk of colorectal cancer (HR 5.03) and nearly double the risk of benign neoplasia (HR 1.91). Liver fibrosis or cirrhosis did not modify these associations.
These findings support closer colorectal surveillance in patients with MASLD or MASH.
