Atopic Dermatitis Linked to Elevated Nonmelanoma Skin Cancer Risk
15 Oct 2025 • An analysis of over 390,000 adults revealed that atopic dermatitis (AD) was linked to a higher risk of nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) compared with matched controls.
Key Findings:
- The NMSC incidence was 2.12 vs. 1.74 cases per 100 person-years, corresponding to an adjusted hazard ratio of 1.32.
- The elevated risk persisted in patients with moderate-to-severe AD and was similar when compared with rheumatoid arthritis controls.
- Those with prior NMSC, malignancy, or organ transplantation faced the greatest risk.
The findings highlight AD as an independent risk factor for NMSC, underscoring the need for regular dermatologic surveillance.
