PCOS Tied to Elevated Long-Term Diabetes Risk
16 Sept 2025 • A large study of over 42,000 women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) showed a significantly higher risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) across all BMI categories.
Key Findings:
- Over 15 years, women with PCOS had a 34.3% cumulative incidence of T2DM versus 22.6% in controls, with an adjusted hazard ratio (HR) of 1.47.
- Even women of normal weight with PCOS faced excess risk (HR 1.78).
- The higher median BMI in the PCOS group (34.86 vs. 27.26 kg/m²) further magnified the risk (HR 1.87).
These findings highlight PCOS as an independent contributor to long-term diabetes risk, with obesity amplifying the metabolic burden.
