Fast Sodium Correction Improves Survival in Severe Hypernatremia

17 Nov 2025 • Correcting sodium more rapidly in the first day of treatment may offer a clear survival benefit for critically ill adults with severe hypernatremia.

In matched analyses of ICU patients with sodium ≥155 mmol/L, faster correction rates (>0.5 mmol/L per hour) were associated with nearly half the 30-day mortality risk compared with slower approaches (aHR 0.49). Patients receiving faster correction also recovered sooner, with higher 30-day hospital-free survival (aHR 1.75), shorter ICU (median 4 vs. 5 days) and overall hospital stays (8 vs. 11 days).

The findings suggest that prompt, carefully monitored sodium reduction could improve outcomes in a population with persistently high mortality.
