Bariatric Surgery: Short-Term Kidney Risks but Long-Term Protection Against CKD
15 Aug 2025 • In 18,827 patients, bariatric surgery showed mixed kidney effects versus matched overweight/obese controls.
It increased 1-year acute kidney injury (AKI) risk (2.7%; aHR = 1.63) and 10-year nephrolithiasis risk (3.5%; aHR = 1.73), but offered strong long-term protection, reducing chronic kidney disease (CKD) stages G3–G5 (aHR = 0.41) and kidney failure needing replacement therapy (aHR = 0.63).
Findings underscore the need for close monitoring of early kidney complications while recognizing substantial long-term renal benefits in obese patients.
