Diabetes and Inflammatory Bowel Disease Found to Fuel Each Other’s Risk
16 Oct 2025 • A large cohort study demonstrated a bidirectional link between type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Key Findings:
- Among 4921 IBD patients and over 438,000 controls followed for 12.6 years, IBD increased T2DM risk (HR 1.44), with similar trends for ulcerative colitis (HR 1.41) and Crohn’s disease (HR 1.62).
- Conversely, T2DM raised the risk of IBD (HR 1.40), ulcerative colitis (HR 1.41), and Crohn’s disease (HR 1.48) over 12.9 years.
Risks rose with greater disease severity in both directions, underscoring shared inflammatory-metabolic pathways and the need for integrated monitoring and prevention.
