Beta-Carotene Shines in Protecting Kids Against Obesity
13 Aug 2025 • A study in children and adolescents found that higher blood levels of most serum carotenoids—especially β-carotene—were linked to lower BMI and reduced obesity risk.
Nearly 24.4% of participants were obese. All carotenoids except lycopene showed inverse associations with BMI and obesity after adjusting for confounders.
Higher carotenoid exposure was tied to a 1.56-point lower BMI and 52% lower odds of obesity (OR = 0.48), with β-carotene accounting for over 70% of the protective effect, highlighting the potential of carotenoid-rich diets in preventing youth obesity.
