Low Hemoglobin Linked to Higher Risk of Diabetic Retinopathy
9 Sept 2025 • In a study of nearly 58,000 adults with type 2 diabetes, low hemoglobin levels (8–12 g/dL) were independently linked to higher diabetic retinopathy (DR) risk.
Patients with low hemoglobin had a 33% higher risk of overall DR (HR 1.33), a 95% higher risk of proliferative DR (HR 1.95), and a 19% greater risk of non-proliferative DR (HR 1.19) versus controls.
Even mild reductions (10–12 g/dL) increased risk, with stronger effects in men and those without hypertension.
Findings underscore hemoglobin as a modifiable risk factor, supporting routine monitoring and correction alongside glycemic and blood pressure control to prevent DR progression.
