Psoriatic Arthritis in Pregnancy Linked to Higher Preterm Birth
7 Oct 2025 • A large study of 688 pregnancies in women with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) found a nearly doubled risk of preterm birth compared with 6,880 controls (7.8% vs 4.5%; aOR 1.80).
Key Findings:
- Risk was highest in those requiring combination therapy with biologic and conventional synthetic DMARDs and/or glucocorticoids (aOR 4.44), while biologic monotherapy alone was not associated with increased risk.
- Discontinuing biologics in the first trimester doubled preterm birth rates (21% vs 10%).
Findings highlight that high disease activity and treatment de-escalation elevate preterm birth risk, underscoring the need for careful multidisciplinary management in PsA pregnancies.
