Transabdominal Cerclage Shows Promise in Reducing Early Preterm Birth Risk
11 Jul 2025 • A new study finds transabdominal cerclage (TAC) significantly reduces early preterm birth (<34 weeks) in cervical insufficiency vs. transvaginal cerclage (TVC)—5.5% vs. 18.7% (RR: 0.30; RD: –13.1%).
This benefit held even without prior failed TVC (RD: –12.6%). Surgical and delivery risks were similar, though TAC saw a few serious uterine complications and higher NICU admissions (35% vs. 23%).
TAC may offer broader benefits, but patient selection is crucial.
