Seronegative Rheumatoid Arthritis Linked to Lower Risk of Colorectal Cancer

28 Aug 2025 • An analysis of 245,000+ individuals found that rheumatoid arthritis (RA) modestly reduced colorectal cancer (CRC) risk, especially in seronegative RA and women.

Key Findings:

  • Over 5.3 years, CRC occurred in 319 RA patients and 1,855 controls, with RA linked to lower overall risk (HR 0.89).
  • The reduction was stronger in seronegative RA (HR 0.79) but not significant in seropositive RA (HR 0.93).
  • Subsite analysis showed an inverse association with rectal cancer (HR 0.63), but not proximal or distal colon cancer.

Findings suggest serostatus and tumor location shape the RA–CRC link, with implications for tailored cancer surveillance.
