Weight Loss Before Pancreatectomy May Protect Against Postoperative Fistulas
16 Jul 2025 • In 43,126 pancreatectomy patients, unintentional >10% preoperative weight loss reduced postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) odds by 13% (OR 0.87), while higher BMI increased risk (overweight: OR 1.28; obese: OR 1.78).
Weight loss modified BMI's effect: each BMI unit increased POPF risk by 67% with weight loss vs 4.3% without.
Findings highlight the BMI-weight loss interplay in POPF risk assessment.
