Hypothermia Strongly Linked to Hypoglycemia in Newborns
28 Aug 2025 • In a study of 1,018 neonates ≥35 weeks, 23.2% developed hypothermia, which was strongly linked to hypoglycemia.
Over half of hypothermic infants had glucose ≤2.5 mmol/L (53.4% vs. 26.2%), and 12.7% had severe hypoglycemia <1.7 mmol/L versus 1.4% of non-hypothermic.
These infants more often required treatment and were more likely to be small for gestational age (SGA), premature, or show perinatal stress.
Among SGA/FGR infants, hypothermia further raised hypoglycemia risk (≤2.5 mmol/L: 58% vs. 35%; <1.7 mmol/L: 15% vs. 4%).
Findings highlight hypothermia as an overlooked but critical risk factor, underscoring the need for vigilant thermal care and glucose monitoring in newborns.
