Psoriasis Doubled Risk of Diabetic Retinopathy in Type 2 Diabetes
19 Sept 2025 • A large study of >170,000 patients with type 2 diabetes found that coexisting psoriasis markedly increased the risk of diabetic retinopathy (DR).
Key Findings:
- Compared with matched controls, psoriasis was linked to more than double the risk of overall DR (HR 2.11), vision-threatening DR (HR 2.42), non-proliferative DR (NPDR: HR 2.15), proliferative DR (HR 2.62), and diabetic macular edema (HR 2.31).
- The strongest association was observed for moderate NPDR (HR 2.85), while severe NPDR showed no significant difference.
These results identify psoriasis as a major risk enhancer for sight-threatening diabetic complications, warranting closer ophthalmic surveillance in this subgroup.
