Congenital Lung Malformations Linked to Higher Asthma Risk in Children

1 Aug 2025 • Children diagnosed with congenital lung malformations (CLMs) before age 6 are 1.76 times more likely to develop asthma than those diagnosed later.

Key asthma risk factors include maternal asthma, male sex, prematurity, and comorbid allergic conditions (e.g., atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis).

Surgery for CLMs—whether performed or done within the first two years—did not increase asthma risk.

These findings underscore the link between early CLM diagnosis and asthma and highlight the importance of close respiratory follow-up in this high-risk group.
