Cardiometabolic Conditions Drive Dementia Progression in MCI
17 Sept 2025 • In a large cohort of adults over 50 with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), cardiometabolic conditions were linked to faster progression to dementia over 7 years.
Type 2 diabetes showed the strongest risk for all-cause dementia (HR = 1.18) and vascular dementia (HR = 1.33), while hypertension also increased overall dementia risk.
Hyperlipidemia was the only cardiometabolic factor tied to Alzheimer’s disease, raising risk by 21% (HR = 1.21).
These findings highlight the impact of metabolic health on dementia trajectories, underscoring the need for prevention and management of cardiometabolic disease in MCI care.
