Even Mild Aldosterone Excess Tied to Hypertension and CKD
11 Sept 2025 • A study of 1,334 adults showed that aldosterone dysregulation, even at low levels (≥5 ng/dL with low renin), was strongly linked to uncontrolled hypertension and chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Patients with aldosterone ≥5 ng/dL had twice the odds of uncontrolled hypertension (aOR 2.01) versus those <5 ng/dL, with consistent associations at ≥10 and ≥15 ng/dL. Aldosterone ≥10 ng/dL also predicted higher CKD prevalence (aOR 1.49).
These results indicate that clinically significant aldosterone excess occurs well below the conventional ≥15 ng/dL threshold, underscoring its underrecognized role in hypertension and kidney disease risk.
