Diabetes Doubles the Risk of Advanced Liver Fibrosis in MASLD Patients

8 Aug 2025 • Advanced liver fibrosis/cirrhosis is more common in MASLD patients with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes (19.4%) vs normoglycemic peers (8.92%), per a study using FIB-4 and VCTE.

BMI was a strong predictor—each unit increase raised fibrosis risk by 30%—while higher HDL-C was protective.

In non-diabetic MASLD, elevated triglycerides and male sex were linked to greater liver stiffness. Findings highlight the need for routine fibrosis screening in diabetic MASLD patients to address the glycemia–liver health connection.
